Sympathy
Flowers
According to a study conducted by the Virginia Polytechnic
Institute, after family, friends, and eulogy, flowers rank first
among those who have lost a family member or friend as the most
meaningful aspect of funerals.
Furthermore, at a time of loss, recipients rank flowers and sympathy
cards as the most meaningful of gifts. Those surveyed believe
flowers and plants are a critical component of funerals, providing
a necessary diversion, something to talk about, and a bright environment
at a somber time.
Asked to identify gifts and memorials that helped a great deal
with grief, a majority of surveyed respondents named flowers and
plants. Respondents also agreed strongly that looking at the cards
to see who sent flowers is a comfort.
Flowers show respect for the deceased, as well as loving support
of family and friends, especially when you cannot be there in
person. Flowers also make for a more pleasant atmosphere, helping
those present feel as comfortable and welcome as possible. With
flowers at a service, you help create a lasting and beautiful
memory for those who have gathered to mourn the loss of someone
dear.
Even when a charity or other organization has been selected to
receive financial contributions in memory of the deceased, flowers
are considered by most to be an appropriate expression of additional
sympathy and support. Flowers can reflect many religious beliefs,
including eternal life and rebirth. Your floral consultant is
well aware of the differences between faiths and will assist you
in this regard.
There is a wide variety of floral tributes for every budget. Among
them: bud vases; table arrangements; standing arrangements; sprays;
casket drapes; wreaths; planters; and other designs which reflect
a more personal aspect of the deceased, such as favored flowers,
colors, and styles. Here, too, your professional florist can advise
you.
Among floral sympathy expressions, distinctive fresh flower designs
and garden basket planters are becoming increasingly popular as
they may be easily transported home after the funeral to serve
as a comfort to the family. Other popular and thoughtful gifts
are fruit and food baskets sent directly to the family at home.

SENDING FLOWERS
(NOTE: This is a supposedly true story).A new business was opening
and one of the owner's friends wanted to send him flowers for
the occasion. The flowers arrived at the new business site and
the owner read the card: "Rest in Peace."The owner was
very angry, to say the least, and called to complain."Sir,
I'm really sorry for the mistake, and sorry you were offended,"
said the florist. "But even worse, somewhere there is a funeral
taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying,
"Congratulations on your new location."
THE FLORIST SHOP
A man stopped at a florist shop after work to pick up roses for
his wife. As the clerk was putting on the finishing touches on
the bouquet, another man burst through the door, breathlessly
requesting a dozen red roses. "I'm sorry," the clerk
said. "This man just ordered our last bunch."The desperate
customer turned to the other man and begged, "May I please
have those roses?""What happened?" the first man
asked. "Did you forget your wedding anniversary?""It's
even worse than that," the second man confided. "I broke
my wife's hard disk drive."
THE FLOWER SHOP
A man walks into a flower shop "I'd like some flowers please.""Certainly,
Sir. What did you have in mind? "He shrugs "Well I'm
not sure, I uh, I uh, I uh...""Perhaps I could help.
What exactly have you done!"
MIXED UP
A local florist just went out of business, but it was his own
fault. He kept getting his orders mixed up.
One woman received flowers sent by her husband, who was at a
business meeting in Florida. She was perplexed by the message
on her card: "Our deepest sympathy."
But she was not nearly as surprised as the woman whose husband
had just passed away. Her card read, "Hotter here than I
expected. Too bad you didn't come too."
FRIARLY BUSINESS
Three friars were banished from their monastary for various rule
violations, so they decided to start a business together. They
travelled around until they found a town that they liked, and
opened up a plant shop. Their floral business was soon thriving.
One day, a woman was shopping at the friar's store, and while
she was strolling down an aisle with her toddler, a large plant
reached out, grabbed the child, and ate it. Needless to say, the
women was quite upset at the loss of her child. However, the friars
refused to believe that one of their plants could have done such
a thing. The woman told all of her friends about the incident,
and soon everyone in the town was in an uproar. They decided to
kick the friars out of town. Every person in the town, except
for a man named Hugh, gathered outside of the friars shop, shouting,
waving sticks, and demanding that they leave. But the friars said
"No. We're not leaving". So the townspeople gave up
and went home.
Well, a couple weeks later, another woman was walking through
the friar's shop, looking at plants with her baby, when a plant
grabbed her child and ate it. She ran through the streets screaming
that a plant had swallowed her baby. The townspeople were outraged,
and again gathered outside the floral shop (except for Hugh),
waving torches, and demanding that the friars leave town at once.
But the friars said, "No way." and all the people gave
up and went home.
A few days later, yet another woman dared to take her child into
the floral shop. She held her infant tightly in her arms, but
it was no use. A large ficus wrestled the child from her arms,
and ate it.
When the townspeople heard of this, they were extremely upset.
They again gathered outside the friar's store (except for Hugh),
yelling and threatening bodily harm to the friars if they didn't
leave town. But the friars said, "We're staying". So,
the citizens gave up and began to go home. Just then, Hugh showed
up. He walked up to the friars, and said, "Get out of town,
now!". The friars immediately packed up all their belongings
and fled that very day, never to be heard from again.
The moral of this story is: Only Hugh can prevent florist friars.
